Brief History of Organization

Tamer Institute for Community Education is an educational non-governmental non-profit organization established in 1989 midst the first Intifada when a study was conducted and the effects of school closures by Israeli forces was evident on the education system. The institute was established as a natural and necessary response to urgent needs in the Palestinian community.  The most important of those needs, according to the Institute is the need to acquire means to help young people learn and produce. We believe that by doing so, we would be participating in the building of the Palestinian civil society, as children and youth in the West Bank and Gaza constitute some 60% of the total population.

Mission

To contribute to building the Palestinian society through creating learning environments amongst youth, children, parents, and teachers by focusing on the invisible aspects of human growth (social, cultural, and spiritual).

Vision

To have a generation of youth who are able to think critically and analytically so as to contribute to the building of their society. The goal of Tamer Institute is to create learning environments in various locales through encouraging reading and the expression of personal experiences in writing, drawing and learning through action in order to widen their knowledge and encourage them to seek information. To do this, we approach children and youth in their locals and encourage them to share their thoughts, achievements, hopes and dreams within small groups, which eventually provide communication network amongst them. Such environments are to give children and youth the opportunities to grow and develop their identity (both personal and national), moral and value and bring them to understand the true meaning of certain topics like human rights, equal opportunities and democracy and voluntary work.

Objectives

  • Re-construct the relationship between youth and their natural environment in Palestine

  • Encourage the habit of reading amongst the Palestinian population in the WB and the GS using creative means

  • Animate children’s libraries all over the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and provide a variety of resources of children’s books and skilled creative people

  • Publish a variety of books for children and youth and develop the quality of local book production and publish educational papers.

  • Encourage youth to write and be creative and communicate through a written public media forum
